Meet Sandfell — a 2022 Hobby Optima A70 GFM, one of the most well-regarded larger motorhomes in its class and one of the most spacious options available to rent in Iceland. Designed for families and groups of up to six, Sandfell combines a clever three-zone sleeping layout with a generous central living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and the kind of interior quality that makes longer trips genuinely comfortable. If you want to explore Iceland as a group without compromising on space or amenities, this is the motorhome to book.
Named after the striking Tuya Mountain that rises from the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Sandfell is a motorhome that punches well above its size. The Hobby Optima A70 GFM is an alcove coachbuilt motorhome on a proven chassis, and the 2022 model brings a refined interior with modern furnishings, excellent insulation, and a thoughtful layout that makes living in a motorhome feel natural rather than compromised.
The sleeping arrangement is the A70 GFM's standout feature. Two adults sleep in the overcab alcove at the front, a raised, partitioned space that can be easily separated from the main living area. Two more sleep in the large transverse double bed at the rear. The central double dinette converts to provide additional sleeping space, bringing the total capacity to six. It is an exceptionally practical layout for families with children or groups of friends sharing the vehicle, because everyone has a proper berth, and the central area, with its kitchen, dining table, and lounge seating, remains open and accessible throughout the day.
The kitchen is L-shaped with plenty of storage and all the amenities needed for cooking on the road. The bathroom is a full wet-room design, practical for families and easy to use for children and adults alike. The Hobby Complete package, standard on all Optima models, ensures the vehicle is genuinely well-equipped from the moment you pick it up — not a bare-bones rental that requires you to buy extras before you feel settled.
Hobby's construction quality is a genuine differentiator at this level. The roofs and floors are GRP-coated for protection against the elements, and the XPS floor insulation provides effective frost protection — a meaningful advantage in Iceland's variable climate. The wastewater tank is installed under the floor in a shatterproof, heated, and insulated box, ensuring it remains functional in cold conditions, and the freshwater tank is frost-protected and securely installed in the bench seat. These are details that matter when you're camping in a country where the weather can change rapidly, and overnight temperatures can drop even in summer.
All rooflights are fitted with pleated blinds and fly screens, and the bathroom is equipped with a full-sized rooflight to keep the space ventilated. Indirect underfloor heating runs through the seating area, and the overall insulation standard makes Sandfell a comfortable four-season vehicle capable of keeping a group of six warm and comfortable, whatever Iceland decides to throw at you.
Travelling as a group in Iceland makes strong practical sense in a motorhome like Sandfell. Hotel rooms for five or six people in Iceland are among the most expensive accommodation costs in Europe. When you factor in restaurant meals across multiple days and the cost of transferring between locations, a traditional group holiday in Iceland adds up very quickly. Sandfell consolidates accommodation, transport, and most meals into a single rental cost, with unlimited kilometres included so you can drive the Ring Road, detour to the Westfjords, or take a slow route down the south coast without watching the meter.
Please note: Sandfell is a 2WD vehicle and is not permitted on F-roads (highland/interior roads). It is fully suited to the Ring Road (Route 1), the south coast, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Golden Circle, and all paved and approved gravel routes throughout Iceland.
Three separate sleeping areas accommodate up to six adults: the overcab alcove (2), the rear transverse double bed (2), and the convertible central dinette (2). The L-shaped kitchen has a gas hob, refrigerator, and ample storage. A full wet room bathroom with shower and toilet provides privacy for the whole group. The heating system runs on gas and includes underfloor heat distribution throughout the seating area. Rooflights with blinds and fly screens run throughout the cabin, and the garage compartment at the rear provides generous additional storage for luggage and outdoor gear. Bluetooth, radio, and USB connectivity keep the group entertained on longer drives.

Here you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about renting the Optima A70 GFM:
Sandfell sleeps up to six people across three separate areas. Two adults sleep in the raised overcab alcove at the front, two in the large transverse double bed at the rear, and the central dinette converts to provide sleeping space for two more. It is a well-proven layout for families with children, two couples, or a group of friends — everyone has a proper place to sleep, and the living area remains fully usable throughout the day.
No. Sandfell is a 2WD motorhome and is not permitted on F-roads — Iceland's highland interior routes. These roads involve river crossings, loose volcanic gravel, and terrain that requires high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Driving a 2WD motorhome on F-roads voids your insurance and could result in serious damage or a costly recovery in a very remote location. Iceland's paved road network, including the full Ring Road, the south coast, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and the Golden Circle, provides more than enough highlights to fill any trip.
Yes, absolutely. The A70 GFM layout was designed with families in mind. The three sleeping areas mean adults and children can sleep separately. The full wet room bathroom is practical and spacious enough for children. The convertible dinette gives flexible daytime space for games, meals, and downtime. Iceland itself is an outstanding destination for younger travellers — geysers, waterfalls, puffins, volcanic landscapes, and the Northern Lights leave a lasting impression at any age.
Pickup and drop-off are coordinated through Keflavik International Airport, with a free shuttle service included with every rental. You'll be collected at the airport and transferred to the RV Iceland depot, just a short drive away. At the end of your trip, the shuttle returns the whole group to the terminal in time for your departure.
Sandfell's kitchen stove, heating system, and hot water all run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). Your rental includes one full 10 kg gas tank and one empty spare, sized for the needs of a larger group. A full tank typically lasts around 5 to 7 days of normal use for five or six people. Replacement canisters are widely available at petrol stations and camping supply shops throughout Iceland.
