Motorhome Keilir: CaraHome 700 DG Campervan Rental in Iceland

Meet Keilir — a spacious, alcove-style motorhome built for larger groups who want to explore Iceland together without sacrificing comfort or space. Based on the Weinsberg CaraHome 700 DG platform and available in 2019 and 2020 models, Keilir sleeps up to six people across three separate sleeping areas, carries a diesel engine with manual transmission, and comes fully equipped for everything Iceland's roads can offer. If you're travelling as a family, a group of friends, or simply want more room to spread out, Keilir is one of the most capable and practical motorhomes available to rent in Iceland.

About Motorhome Keilir — CaraHome 700 DG

Named after the iconic volcanic cone that rises sharply from the Reykjanes Peninsula, Keilir is a motorhome that makes a statement. The Weinsberg CaraHome 700 DG is one of the most respected larger motorhomes in its class — an alcove coachbuilt design that makes exceptional use of its 7.41-metre length to deliver sleeping space for six, a generous central living area, and a full suite of amenities that make it genuinely liveable for a week, two weeks, or longer on the road.

The CaraHome 700 DG's defining feature is its sleeping layout. Two adults sleep in the overcab alcove at the front — a raised, private space above the cab with its own vent and heating. Two more sleep in the rear fixed double bed. And the central double dinette converts to an additional sleeping area, bringing total capacity to six. For a family with children or a group of friends sharing costs, this layout is exceptionally practical — everyone has a proper place to sleep, and the central area with table, seating, and kitchen remains accessible throughout.

The interior is well-finished for its class, with curved overhead cabinets, aluminium trim profiles, and a layout that keeps the living space open and easy to move around. Headroom is generous throughout the main cabin. The kitchen includes a three-ring gas hob, a large refrigerator, and ample worktop and storage space. A separate shower and toilet compartment ensures privacy for the whole group, and the Truma heating system keeps the cabin warm and comfortable even during Iceland's cooler months.

Under the bonnet, the CaraHome 700 DG runs a Peugeot Boxer base vehicle with a 2.2-litre BlueHDI diesel engine producing 165 horsepower, paired with a manual gearbox. The Boxer is a well-proven motorhome platform — widely serviced, reliable, and well-suited to longer journeys on varied road surfaces. At a gross vehicle weight of up to 4,000 kg it's a substantial vehicle, but the long wheelbase and power output make it composed and confidence-inspiring on Iceland's open highways.

Renting a larger motorhome in Iceland for a group of five or six people is one of the most cost-effective ways to see the country. Hotel rooms for a group in Iceland — especially during peak summer season — can be prohibitively expensive. Keilir consolidates accommodation, transport, and most meals into a single, fixed cost, and the unlimited kilometres included with every rental mean you can drive as much of Iceland as you want without watching the meter.

Please note: Keilir is a 2WD vehicle and is not permitted on F-roads (highland/interior roads). It is fully suited to the Ring Road (Route 1), the south coast, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Golden Circle, and all paved and approved gravel routes throughout Iceland.

Why rent a motorhome in Iceland instead of a hotel?

Iceland is one of the few places in the world where the journey genuinely matters as much as the destination. The country's most breathtaking moments — a curtain of green Northern Lights reflected in a still fjord, the first light of a summer sunrise hitting a glacier, a deserted black sand beach with no one else in sight — rarely happen on a schedule. They happen when you're in the right place at the right time. A motorhome puts you there.

When you rent a campervan in Iceland, you stop being a tourist moving between fixed points and start actually living in the landscape. You wake up where you parked the night before — beside a waterfall, at the edge of a lava field, or overlooking the sea — make coffee, and decide over breakfast where the day takes you. No lobby, no checkout time, no taxi to the next town.

For groups travelling together, the case is even stronger. Booking five or six hotel beds across multiple nights in Iceland is one of the most expensive ways to see the country. In Keilir, your accommodation cost stays fixed regardless of where you go, everyone stays together in the same vehicle, and the kitchen on board means you're not paying restaurant prices for every meal. Most groups find the total cost of a motorhome trip in Iceland — even in a larger vehicle — works out cheaper than the equivalent in hotels, and infinitely more memorable.

Iceland's infrastructure makes motorhome travel genuinely easy. The Ring Road (Route 1) circles the entire country on fully paved roads, connecting waterfalls, glaciers, geothermal areas, and coastal villages in a single continuous loop. The campsite network is extensive, well-maintained, and open from May through September, with most sites offering electricity hook-ups, hot showers, and facilities for larger vehicles. For groups who want to see Iceland properly, travel at their own pace, and share an experience they'll talk about for years, a motorhome is the obvious choice.

Every vehicle in the RV Iceland fleet is well-maintained, regularly serviced, and stocked with everything you need before you even leave the depot. There are no last-minute surprises, no hidden fees, and no fine print designed to catch you out. The price you see includes VAT, CDW insurance, unlimited kilometres, and a free airport shuttle.

The team at RV Iceland are knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely passionate about Iceland. Whether you have a question before you book, need advice on routes and road conditions while you're on the road, or need assistance in the unlikely event something goes wrong, you'll reach a real person who knows the country and knows the vehicles. That kind of support matters when you're travelling as a group in an unfamiliar country, often in remote areas with unpredictable weather.

With a free shuttle service running between Keflavik Airport and the RV Iceland depot, getting started couldn't be simpler. You land, you're collected, and the whole group is on the road in no time. The same smooth process works in reverse when you return: drop off Keilir, hop on the shuttle, and catch your flight without any stress.

For first-time motorhome travellers, the RV Iceland team provides a thorough handover at the start of every rental. You'll be walked through every system in the vehicle — the heating, the water, the gas, the kitchen, the electrics — so the whole group leaves the depot feeling confident and prepared. Iceland is a remarkable place to travel. RV Iceland's job is to make sure nothing gets in the way of that.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Here you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about renting the CaraHome 700 DG:

How many people can sleep in Keilir?

Keilir sleeps up to six people across three separate sleeping areas. Two adults sleep in the raised overcab alcove at the front of the vehicle, two sleep in the fixed double bed at the rear, and the central double dinette converts to an additional sleeping space for two more. It's a practical layout for families with children, two couples travelling together, or a group of friends — everyone has a proper berth, and the central living space remains open and usable throughout.

Can I drive Keilir on F-roads?

No. Keilir is a 2WD motorhome and is not permitted on F-roads — Iceland's highland interior routes. F-roads involve river crossings, loose volcanic gravel, and terrain that requires high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Driving a 2WD motorhome on F-roads voids your insurance and could result in serious damage or a costly recovery in a very remote location. Iceland's paved road network — including the Ring Road, south coast, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and the Golden Circle — more than makes up for it, and provides far more highlights than most groups can cover in two weeks.

Is Keilir suitable for families with children?

Yes, Keilir is an excellent choice for families. The three sleeping areas mean adults and children can sleep separately, the convertible dinette provides flexible space during the day, and the full kitchen means you can cook proper meals on board rather than relying on restaurants. The belted seating for six means everyone travels safely while on the road. Iceland is also an outstanding destination for children — waterfalls, geysers, volcanic landscapes, puffins, and the Northern Lights are things that leave a lasting impression at any age.

Where do I pick up and return the motorhome?

Pickup and drop-off are coordinated through Keflavik International Airport, with a free shuttle service included with every rental. You'll be collected at the airport and transferred to the RV Iceland depot, just a short drive away. At the end of your trip, the shuttle returns the whole group to the terminal in time for your flight.

How does the gas supply work for a group of six?

Keilir's kitchen stove, Truma heating system, and hot water all run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). Your rental includes one full 10 kg gas tank and one empty spare — a larger supply suited to the needs of a bigger group. A full 10 kg tank typically lasts around 5–7 days for a group of five or six with normal use. Replacement canisters are widely available at petrol stations and camping supply shops throughout Iceland.
