Meet Askja — a spacious, fully equipped home on wheels built for families, friend groups, and anyone who refuses to compromise on comfort while exploring Iceland. This 2020 Fiat Weinsberg R58 is a larger motorhome with sleeping space for up to four people, a powerful diesel engine, and everything you need for an unforgettable road trip through one of the world's most extraordinary landscapes. Whether you're planning a summer drive along the Ring Road or an autumn adventure chasing the Northern Lights, Askja gives your whole group the freedom to travel Iceland entirely on your own terms.
Named after one of Iceland's most dramatic volcanic calderas, Askja is built for travellers who want more space, more comfort, and more freedom. With four sleeping spaces, a full kitchen, private shower and toilet, heating, and generous storage throughout, Askja handles everything a group of four could need — without anyone feeling cramped.
The Fiat Weinsberg R58 is a well-proven motorhome platform, and the 2020 model brings a refined interior layout that makes the most of every centimetre. There's a proper dining area where the whole group can sit down together, a well-equipped kitchen stocked with everything you need to cook real meals, and two separate sleeping areas that give everyone their own space at the end of the day. Travelling as a group in Iceland doesn't mean squeezing into a small campervan and making do — in Askja, it means arriving at a glacier lagoon, cooking dinner together with a view, and waking up ready to do it all again.
Under the bonnet, the Weinsberg R58 runs a 2,287cc 4-stroke diesel engine producing 131 horsepower, paired with a manual transmission and 2WD drivetrain. At 2,931 kg it's a substantial vehicle, but it's well-balanced and straightforward to drive — even for motorhome first-timers. Iceland's main roads are wide, well-maintained, and designed with larger vehicles in mind. You'll feel comfortable behind the wheel within the first hour.
Please note: Askja is a 2WD vehicle and is not permitted on F-roads (highland/interior roads). It is fully suited to the Ring Road (Route 1), the south coast, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Golden Circle, and all paved and approved gravel routes.
Please note: Askja is available for rental between 1 April and 10 October.
Iceland is one of the few places in the world where the journey genuinely matters as much as the destination. The country's most breathtaking moments — a curtain of green Northern Lights reflected in a still fjord, the first light of a summer sunrise hitting a glacier, a deserted black sand beach with no one else in sight — rarely happen on a schedule. They happen when you're in the right place at the right time. A motorhome puts you there.
When you rent a campervan in Iceland, you stop being a tourist moving between fixed points and start actually living in the landscape. You wake up where you parked the night before — beside a waterfall, at the edge of a lava field, or overlooking the sea — make coffee, and decide over breakfast where the day takes you. No lobby, no checkout time, no taxi to the next town.
For groups travelling together, the case is even stronger. Booking four hotel beds across multiple nights in Iceland is one of the most expensive ways to see the country. In Askja, your accommodation cost stays fixed, everyone stays together, and the kitchen on board means you're not paying for four restaurant meals every day. Many groups find the whole trip works out cheaper than a hotel-based holiday — while feeling far more like an adventure.
Iceland's infrastructure makes it unusually well-suited to motorhome travel. The Ring Road (Route 1) circles the entire country on fully paved roads, connecting waterfalls, glaciers, geothermal areas, and coastal villages in one continuous loop. The campsite network is extensive and well-maintained, open from May through September, with most sites offering showers, electricity hook-ups, and kitchen facilities. For groups who want to travel further and see more, there's no better way to do it.

RV Iceland is a family-run campervan rental company located just minutes from Keflavik International Airport, built around one straightforward idea: that renting a motorhome in Iceland should be simple, honest, and genuinely enjoyable from the moment you land.
Every vehicle in the RV Iceland fleet is well-maintained, regularly serviced, and stocked with everything you need before you even leave the depot. There are no last-minute surprises, no hidden fees, and no fine print designed to catch you out. The price you see includes VAT, CDW insurance, unlimited kilometres, and a free airport shuttle — because that's how it should work.
The team at RV Iceland are knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely passionate about Iceland. Whether you have a question before you book, need advice on routes and road conditions while you're on the road, or need assistance in the unlikely event something goes wrong, you'll reach a real person who knows the country and knows the vehicles. That kind of support matters when you're travelling as a group in an unfamiliar country, often in remote areas and changeable weather.
With a free shuttle service running between Keflavik Airport and the RV Iceland depot, getting started couldn't be simpler. You land, you're collected, and the whole group is on the road in no time. The same smooth process works in reverse when you return: drop off Askja, hop on the shuttle, and catch your flight without any stress.
For first-time motorhome travellers, the RV Iceland team provides a thorough handover at the start of every rental. You'll be walked through every system in the vehicle — the heating, the water, the gas, the kitchen, the electrics — so the whole group leaves the depot feeling confident and prepared. Iceland is a remarkable place to travel. RV Iceland's job is to make sure nothing gets in the way of that.
Here you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about renting the Fiat Weinsberg R58
No. Askja is a 2WD motorhome and is not permitted on F-roads — Iceland's highland interior routes. F-roads involve river crossings, loose volcanic gravel, and extreme terrain that requires high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Driving a 2WD motorhome on F-roads voids your insurance and could result in serious damage or a very costly recovery operation in a remote area. The good news is that Iceland's paved road network — including the entire Ring Road, the south coast, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and the Golden Circle — offers more highlights than most people can cover in two weeks.
Askja is available for rental between 1 April and 10 October. This seasonal window covers Iceland's spring, summer, and early autumn — the best time to travel for long daylight hours, open campsites, and accessible roads. If you're looking for a year-round motorhome option, take a look at Motorhome Katla, which is available throughout the year.
Askja sleeps up to 4 adults across two separate sleeping areas — a main bed and an additional sleeping space. It's ideal for families with children, two couples travelling together, or a small group of friends. The dining area seats everyone comfortably for meals, and there's enough storage for a group's worth of bags and gear.
Pickup and drop-off are coordinated through Keflavik International Airport, with a free shuttle service included with every rental. You'll be collected at the airport and transferred to the RV Iceland depot, just a short drive away. At the end of your trip, the shuttle gets the whole group back to the terminal in time for your flight.
Askja's kitchen stove, heating system, and hot water all run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). Your rental includes one full 10 kg gas tank and one empty spare — a larger supply than the smaller Katla motorhome, reflecting Askja's capacity for four people. A full tank typically lasts around 5–7 days of normal use for a group. Replacement canisters are widely available at petrol stations and camping supply shops throughout Iceland, so running low is never a problem.
CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) insurance is included as standard with every rental. RV Iceland also offers additional coverage including gravel and ash protection — strongly recommended, as Iceland's roads can throw up loose stones that damage paintwork and windscreens — as well as sand and lava protection and a super CDW option with a reduced excess. These can be added during booking. No insurance covers damage incurred on F-roads.
